What is counselling?

Counselling is about helping you with issues in the here and now.  In a short series of sessions, you would have time to express your thoughts and feelings in a confidential and safe environment, and you and I would work together towards an agreed goal.

 What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is more of an in-depth process that looks at the beliefs and values you carry with you from your early life and how they affect the way you think, feel and behave. Over a longer series of sessions, you and I will work together to help you better understand why you think feel and behave as you do and to identify elements that hold you back from a fulfilling and positive life.

What’s the difference between talking to you and talking to my friends?

You can speak to me in confidence. I’m impartial and won’t judge you.  That can make it easier for you to talk freely and I am trained to help and support you.  I won’t try to ‘fix’ you or tell you what to do, but I will help you to find your own answers.

What to expect

When you first meet me, it’s an opportunity for both of us to ask lots of questions.  You’ll be able to find out how I work and decide if I’m the right person to help you.  It’s really important that you feel comfortable and able to work with me.

We will discuss what you want to achieve from therapy, and what’s realistic – but don’t worry if you’re not sure about that just yet.

I will be clear about what I can offer and how you and I could work together.  If you decide to you want to begin therapy with me, we’ll arrange your next session.
